{"id":18764,"date":"2018-06-13T14:58:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T14:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nobraineragency.com\/seo\/https-www-nobraineragency-co-uk-blog-awards-no-brainer-director-named-warringtons-business-man-of-the-year\/"},"modified":"2023-10-24T13:38:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T13:38:16","slug":"no-brainer-director-named-man-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nobraineragency.com\/business\/no-brainer-director-named-man-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"No Brainer Director named Warrington\u2019s Business Man of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday evening, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobraineragency.co.uk\/about-us\/\">No Brainer gang<\/a>\u00a0were lucky enough to attend the biennial\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.warringtonbusinessawards.co.uk\/\">Warrington Business Awards<\/a>\u00a0and enjoy an evening celebrating local talent.<\/p>\n<p>After bagging New Business of the Year at the last WBA ceremony in 2016, this year was the turn of our Director, Gary Jenkins to be shortlisted, and the stakes were high!<\/p>\n<p>With more than 450 people at the sold-out ceremony, there was some serious competition for Business Man of the Year, so we were ecstatic when Gary\u2019s name was called out at the glitzy ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Gary\u2019s debrief on the evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>How did it feel to take home the WBA Business Man of the Year?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It felt surreal. I was delighted but, as with all award ceremonies, there\u2019s literally nothing you can do when you get there on the night. The decision is already made and it\u2019s just some words in an envelope \u2013 so you\u2019ve just got to cross your fingers I guess.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re up against some strong competition, it\u2019s one of those things where you just don\u2019t know how it\u2019s going to go. My kids had already said that if I didn\u2019t win then there\u2019s nothing wrong with being the \u2018runner-up\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>So, when my name was called out, it felt really, really good. And it was great to be there with all the team \u2013 because no successful business is a one-person operation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>How well do you think Warrington is performing as a location for start-up and small businesses?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warrington is regarded nationally as a hot bed for start-ups and it\u2019s definitely been massively supportive of us.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I constantly talk about the \u2018Warrington Welcome\u2019 and how supportive the town\u2019s business community and support organisations can be. Most people want you to succeed, they want you to do well. People have taken meetings with me when I didn\u2019t really even have a business \u2013 I was just starting out. People like Steve Park at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/warringtonandco.com\/\">Warrington &#038; Co<\/a>, Gary Skentelbery at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warrington-worldwide.co.uk\/\">Warrington Worldwide<\/a>, Gareth Dunning at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.warringtonguardian.co.uk\/\">Warrington Guardian<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 these people are all busy people, but they made time to speak to me.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s this type of support network in Warrington that\u2019s helping businesses to grow and with the introduction of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/warringtonandco.com\/the-business-exchange\/\">Warrington Business Exchange<\/a>, there\u2019s even more of a platform here now. The Business Exchange gives people a \u2018go to\u2019 destination for everyone thinking about starting or growing a business through a single point. Start-ups need that funnel, they need that obvious go-to for support and advice.<\/p>\n<p>I still think there\u2019s work to do in showcasing the town as a welcome environment for small businesses to operate, and I also think there\u2019s work to do around niche specialisms.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re obviously strong on logistics because of Warrington\u2019s brilliant location. But when you look at, for example, digital marketing and digital businesses, there\u2019s not really much there. So, it\u2019s thinking about what sort of sectors do we want to own? Manchester is saturated with marketing agencies and digital companies. What does Warrington want be known for?<\/p>\n<p>But in terms of support, it\u2019s been fantastic. For example, the team at Warrington &#038; Co have helped us with location scouting. There\u2019s businesses here that want to support each other. It\u2019s brilliant. It\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>What does a typical week look like for you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think because of the business we\u2019re in, there is no typical week. If a client has a crisis, I\u2019ll drop everything and help them. That might mean putting strategy to one side or putting time aside for campaigns etc. But in terms of a typical week, there\u2019s so much variation to our work especially because we\u2019ve got so many clients now!<\/p>\n<p>A lot of my work is around new business and growing the company. But it\u2019s also about making sure everyone in the team is happy and that we\u2019re providing the right environment for our guys. It\u2019s also about managing the nuts and bolts of running a business. It\u2019s legal, it\u2019s HR, it\u2019s finances \u2013 the list goes on! But when you\u2019ve got a team of people that you want to keep happy and motivated and focused and delivering for clients, then that adds a layer of complexity that as a business owner, takes some getting used to!<\/p>\n<p>I think as long as you throw yourself into it, seek good advice and pay for great people to manage all the stuff you\u2019re not good not at, then you\u2019ll be alright.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019ve made a few mistakes along the way! Failure is inevitable in certain areas. As long as they\u2019re not HUGE mistakes! Everyone is allowed to fail \u2013 it\u2019s what you learn from it that mattes.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>What does the future look like for No Brainer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have a very clear plan in terms of where we want to go with the business. We are already ahead of that plan. That\u2019s taken a lot of hard work.<\/p>\n<p>I think the key for us is to grow but grow in the right way. We\u2019ll never sacrifice or compromise our values in terms of how we serve our clients. Our plan is to grow \u2013 of course! \u2013 but we never want to lose that commitment to clients and those quality standards we set ourselves in everything we do. We never want to lose that personal commitment that we have to really know all of our clients.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t just want to win business and make as much money as we can. We want to build long-term relationships. That\u2019s why one of our biggest success metrics is client retention.<\/p>\n<p>We want to be a good-sized business, making a good amount of money with satisfied clients and happy staff.<\/p>\n<p>Winning this award is recognition that we must be doing a decent job! I can\u2019t believe the amount of people that have got in touch congratulating me from old jobs but also people I don\u2019t know, which is great!<\/p>\n<p>And while all that is great, I can\u2019t take all the glory! I share this award with our families and the fantastic No Brainer team without whom I couldn\u2019t do what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a real pleasure to work with some of my best friends every day and you definitely don\u2019t achieve anything like this without amazing people by your side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s fair to say that PR isn\u2019t easy to define.
